Trip to Aperschnalzen Events in the Alps!

Driving the winter away by competitive whip-cracking

Aperschnalzen is a form of whip-cracking (Bavarian: Goaßlschnalzen) practiced in winter. "Aper" is used in Bavaria and Austria to refer to a "snow-free" landscape. In the snowy Alpine region, people invented this traditional form of rhythmic whip-cracking to "drive away" the last snow at the end of winter and revive nature for the coming spring.

Aperschnalzen has survived to this day in the Rupertigau region of Upper Bavaria on the border with Salzburg (St. Rupert is the patron saint of Salzburg). Every year between the end of December and the beginning of February, competitions are held there in rhythmic whip-cracking, with prizes awarded to the best. Those who are good practice for it all year round!

This much can be revealed in advance: It looks easier than it is. And it doesn't really depend on strength. And the forearm is more important than the upper arm!

Curious now? Then let's go together to a rustic custom in the Bavarian-Austrian Alps!
