Trip to the Leonhardi Procession!
(Bad Tölz Leonhardifahrt)

A pilgrimage on horseback

Every year on November 6, the Leonhardi procession takes place in honor of St. Leonhard of Limoges. He is venerated in Bavaria as the patron saint of agricultural animals, especially horses. The procession is a pilgrimage on horseback that takes place in many Bavarian communities. The Leonhardi procession in Bad Tölz (in German: Tölzer Leonhardifahrt) is the largest and most beautiful one!

In 2022 the first Bad Tölz Leonhardifahrt took place after the two-year break because of the Corona pandemic. 71 wagons went through the town up the Calvary. They were pulled by magnificently decorated horses. In the wagons sat women, men and children in Bavarian costumes. My guests and I experienced the Leonhardi procession in 2022 and were thrilled by the splendor we were presented with on a late autumn, sunny day (see video below).

Join us next time! After experiencing the Leonhardi procession in Bad Tölz, we will be having lunch with a good Bavarian meal with home-brewed beer in a nearby Klosterbräustüberl enjoying the view of the Bavarian mountains!

Do you want to know more right now?

The Leonhardi processions, which are especially widespread in Bavaria and in western areas of Austria, have been known in the Bavarian region since the 15th century. The Leonhardi procession also plays an important role in preserving peasant culture. In earlier times, the possession of horses was possible only for the richest farmers. In many village churches in Bavaria, votive images have survived to this day, donated in gratitude for the rescue of injured or sick horses. The Leonhardi procession spreads awareness of the value of animals whose perception has been greatly affected by the mechanization of agriculture.

The "Bad Tölz Leonhardifahrt" is documented since 1772, was reorganized in 1856 by the parish priest of Bad Tölz and is still held regularly today. In 2016, it was entered in the register of the intangible world cultural heritage in Bavaria.
