Trip to the Perchten Parade!

A lucky charm for the new year

Perchten show themselves to people during the winter! They appear around the date of the winter solstice. This is the shortest day of the year! After that, the days become longer again. For thousands of years, people have celebrated the days around the winter solstice with important festivals. The Christian Christmas is also part of this tradition.

The Upper Bavarian village of Kirchseeon is home to one of the most beautiful Perchten parades in Bavaria. The most impressive masks can be found there and can even be visited in their own museum, the "Maskeum". A trip to one of the Perchten processions is always worthwhile and can be very well combined with a proper Bavarian dinner in one of the numerous traditional inns with attached brewery.

Be there next time and join in the fun! After that, no more misfortune can happen to us, because Perchten are good luck and blessing bringers!

I am looking forward to your request. I will be happy to organize our joint excursion.

Perchten or Passen – An alpine winter custom!

Perchten parades are mainly found in the Alps and the Bavarian Forest. Despite their often gruesome appearance, Perchten are good luck and blessing bringers and are supposed to protect house and yard from misfortune in the coming year as well as bring fertility. They are also supposed to cheer people up in this dark season, now that the worst, the winter season, is over and the days are getting longer again.

The "Kirchseeoner Perchtenlauf" (Perchten parade in Kirchseeon) is a winter parade custom, in which a group of differently masked figures moves through the community on up to eleven dates from Advent to the night of Epiphany (6 January) and performs dances, songs and sayings. It took place for the first time in the winter of 1953/54 to promote tourism and has since developed into an established custom that also became an inspiration for other places. The masks, costumes, props and procedures are partly based on older customs and forms or are newly invented. The Perchtenverein (association to support the Perchten parade) is active throughout the year, as the dances have to be practiced and masks and robes have to be repaired or newly created. Since 2021, the "Maskeum" in Kirchseeon has had its own museum of the Perchtenlauf (Perchten parade).

In 2022, the "Kirchseeoner Perchtenlauf" was entered in the register of intangible world cultural heritage in Bavaria.
